Day 10: 1 Big Mistake I Made When I Was First Getting Started In Online Writing

Not Defining My Audience

Like most beginners, I made a lot of mistakes when I first started working in online writing.

But this was the biggest one, by far:

Not Defining My Audience

Here's what happened:

In my eagerness to start writing, I overlooked the crucial step of defining my target audience. I wrote on a variety of topics, aiming to appeal to everyone. As a result, my content lacked focus and failed to resonate deeply with any particular group. My articles were a mishmash of ideas and styles, making it hard for readers to connect with my work or see me as an authority in any niche.

But, it's also worth acknowledging that making this mistake taught me a ton.

The importance of understanding and defining your audience cannot be overstated. It shapes the tone, style, and content of your writing. It helps you build a loyal readership and establish yourself in a specific niche. Once I started tailoring my content to a specific audience, not only did my engagement increase, but my writing became more purposeful and fulfilling.

This is why I encourage everyone to see their mistakes (and "failures") as necessary steps along the path.

There is always a lesson to be learned. In my case, it was about the power of writing with a clear, defined audience in mind. This has been a game-changer for my online writing career.
