Why Going It Alone in Your Career Change Is a Mistake (And What to Do Instead)

Discover the power of seeking guidance from mentors, coaches, and communities to make your career transition smoother and more successful.

Everyone struggles with navigating career changes.

Personally, I have for years. I found myself stuck in a job that no longer fulfilled me, but the thought of starting over in a new field was overwhelming. The fear of the unknown, potential financial instability, and doubt about whether I was making the right choice all held me back.

But what changed for me was realizing that I needed to seek help. And as soon as that clicked, I started to understand that overcoming the challenges of a career change wasn't that hard—I was just trying to do it all on my own.

Here's what I did instead:

I sought help from people who had successfully navigated their own career changes.

I got coaching, talked with some of my mentors, and joined an online community. These steps provided me with the guidance and support I needed to start my side business and eventually transition to a new career.

Why does this approach work? Because seeking help from others provides valuable insights, encouragement, and practical advice. It connects you with people who have been through similar experiences and can offer strategies that worked for them. By leveraging their knowledge and support, the daunting task of a career change becomes manageable and much less intimidating.

So, if you're considering a career change, don't try to go it alone. Seek help from coaches, mentors, and communities that can guide you through the process and help you achieve your goals. Seek advice from someone whose place you aspire to be in, or if you can't find anyone, you can even do it with ChatGPT-4 nowadays!
